![]() ![]() Here are different photos of the crazy statues; this time of their shadows rather than their details. I'm curious which one you prefer. Is the first better because it's more abstract? Or the second because of the shadow of a man? or are they both boring? Tell me honestly ... really! Posted by Gaja at December 20, 2004 9:28 PM © All images are copyrighted. By the way, congrats on your PhotoFriday "Abandoned" Noteworthy! Posted by: Sara at December 21, 2004 12:57 PM i agree with mark. the second. on the first there's no place the eye is drawn to and so it's constantly dancing around without being able to focus on anything. and the tree is cropped oddly. in the second one there's the tree as the central focus from which you can find the other elements. it's a much stronger composition. Posted by: e.ku at December 21, 2004 11:52 AM I like the first better. In the second one the tree takes away from the main poin tof the picture - the shadows. (I didn't even notice the man's shadow). Plus the numbers 101 and 102 play against each other in the first. Posted by: Matt at December 21, 2004 10:32 AM I like the first one for it's simplicity and I think the shadows work better on the wall as well. Posted by: Simon at December 21, 2004 2:54 AM I have a slight preference for 1, because it seems a little less busy and because the shadow of the man doesn't really pop out at me in 2. If you hadn't told me he was there, I probably wouldn't have noticed. Posted by: chiaroscuro at December 20, 2004 10:23 PM I really like this abstract, especially that some areas of shadow are darker than others. That, combined with the different colored geometric shapes on the building itself really give this photo a layered look. The tree is a perfect as a focal point, and also as a non-geometric item casting a shadow. I was wondering, however, if it might be better if the top were cropped, so that you can't see the sky above the building? I think the sky might make this scene too "real" (too much like you took a picture of the side of a building) and, thus, less abstract. As for comparing the two photos, my preference is for the first one for two reasons. First, the second photo contains not only sky, but also ground (see my reason above for not liking the sky). And the other reason is that I don't think the man's shadow stands out enough to make it worth having in there. I had to look for it when you mentioned it - it definitely didn't jump out at me. Posted by: luminouslens at December 20, 2004 10:13 PM Definitely the second one. With the tree being on the left side of the frame, I'm immediately drawn to it as the central focus, then I scan across and notice the man's shadow, the 102, and the cross. Very nice picture.
