Up the Chimney | « Texture & Light | Main | Smooth & Blue » |
![]() Hi everyone, I've had two people ask me about the DoF in this shot so here's the scoop. I did not alter it in PS. The camera settings were f4.6, focal length 10.7mm (equivalent to 65 in 35mm). But I think the real issue is that you can't tell from this photo how tall this chimney actually is; it's several (maybe 4-5) stories tall and I was shooting from ground level. That's not to say that the camera cannot shoot with narrow DoF, check out this photo. It was set at f2.8 w/ 6mm focal distance (36mm equivalent). Hope this helps. CommentsThe other factor to consider is that the closer you get to the subject, the shallower your DOF becomes. Technical mumbo jumbo out of the way, I like the perspective on this photo, wouldn't mind seeing it with a deeper DOF though. Posted by: Marc at January 30, 2005 11:33 AM great use of perspective, great use use of color, great use of line...very nice. Posted by: ed at January 28, 2005 8:32 PM Absolutely love this shot! Posted by: Colin at January 28, 2005 2:47 AM inviting shot, nice! :) Posted by: diana chan at January 27, 2005 1:31 PM incredible detail in the rope texture. it catches you and leads your eye back. wonderful surroundings as well. Posted by: zerosun at January 27, 2005 12:54 PM Beautiful color and attractive composition! Posted by: jiro at January 26, 2005 9:04 AM I love the DOF here...feels like I took a moment to capture this image while climbing the wall. Also...I did not think 'PS' at first...it looks like it's from your camera's setting. Great idea at that time you spotted it... Posted by: Ed Little, Jr. at January 26, 2005 1:12 AM Nice work - it just goes on and on - excellent! Posted by: deceptive at January 25, 2005 6:52 PM Very nice shot, it's nice the way you are 'forced' to follow the rope. BTW i think the blur effect it's done with the 'lens blur' in photoshop. Am I right? Posted by: Francesco Di Maggio at January 25, 2005 4:21 PM awesome perspective. and i love the detail on that rope, i'm not surprise people would mistake it for a snake at first glance. also, im quite amaze with the ability of your camera, specially the ability to give a very narrow DOF, something it thought only d(SLR) could do. would you mind sharing the setting you used on this one? Posted by: ren at January 25, 2005 3:25 PM Boy, am I glad you left a comment on my site, so I was able to find your shots here. Very very cool, especially this one. The perspective, DOF, and shapes are all so very appealing. Posted by: Abhi at January 25, 2005 3:19 PM Wonderfully balanced composition. I too thought it was a snake at first. Love the DoF and that cloud. Posted by: orange at January 25, 2005 9:24 AM Beautiful photo! Nice angle:) Posted by: Saikoro at January 25, 2005 3:54 AM I like how the rope leads the eye. Well done! Posted by: Andreas at January 25, 2005 2:58 AM Fantastic perspective and focus. At very first glance I thought it was a snake. :) Posted by: Simon at January 25, 2005 2:56 AM Wonderful perspective shot -> I really like it!
