![]() When I first started using Photoshop I didn't know there were so many different ways of converting color images into black and white. I am still amazed at how drastically different two black and white conversions of the same image can be. So for this shot I converted it into black and white using different settings in the source channels of channel mixer in Photoshop. The two black and white results are shown in the extended entry. Thanks to Visual Field for the suggestion to try black and white for this shot, and for teaching me about the awesome channel mixer! Channel mixer with monochrome option and positive amount of red channel, slight negative on the others: ![]() Positive amount of green channel, negative on others: ![]() Posted by Gaja at February 4, 2005 8:01 PM © All images are copyrighted. Among the B/W versions I much prefer the last one, for the way it preserves the texture and light reflected on the surfaces (the middle version looks too contrasted and lacks details in both highlights and bin dark areas, which is a common result of too much red channel, which captures most of the sun light). Channel mixer is quite an amazing tool for these kind of experiments... Another thing I like is the slightly tilted brick line, which creates an optical illusion with the shadows... Posted by: dct at February 8, 2005 9:07 AM definitely the third one! you've opened up more detail on the bin by using the green channel, great work! Posted by: ren at February 7, 2005 1:10 PM I like the second b&w shot. Its exposure is really good. Posted by: Andreas at February 7, 2005 8:41 AM Wonderful light, amazing shadow. I think I like the third version the best. Posted by: matt at February 6, 2005 9:58 PM Wonderful light, amazing shadow. I think I like the third version the best. Posted by: matt at February 6, 2005 9:57 PM Gorgeous. I definitely like the color version the best. That red color is very lovely and is a great contrast to the dark trash bin. And as for that shadow, well, it's perfection! Posted by: Sara at February 6, 2005 8:22 PM I definitely need to learn more about converting to B&W in PS. In fact, I just need to learn more about PS in general. :) Posted by: Simon at February 5, 2005 10:31 PM The long shadow impresses me...... what time of day was it taken, where was the sun? Posted by: Chantal at February 5, 2005 1:04 PM Whoa! I'm very impressed by the conversion as well. I do admit that I love the color image the best. The way you framed this with the can on the left and the shadow drifting to the right is brilliant. Who knew that even a trash can could be so beautiful through the eye of your camera lens. Great shot! :) Posted by: jyoseph at February 5, 2005 11:00 AM I like the second one. Like the comment before, the trashcan has more detail, and I ike the brick wall better. That's the beauty of B&W. We live in a color world, so there are so many different ways to view it in B&W. Posted by: Matt at February 4, 2005 10:44 PM Ooh, they're all really cool!! I totally love this photo, no matter how you convert it. I think of the two black and whites, I prefer the one with the positive green channel, because there are more tones in the trash can itself and since it's the only 3-D object there, it's where my eye goes even though the shadow is the truly cool thing here. One option, which would be a major pain, would be to select the trash can and convert it using the positive green combo you did and then invert the selection and use the positive red combo. That is a pain though, isn't it? :) Actually, though, I really really like the color one here. It's the most vibrant and striking, I think.
