Study of Tone and Mood

I've been thinking a bit about portraits, lighting, and my emotional responses to photographs (which by the way I cannot for the life of me put into words). I've seen some really amazing portraits on others' blogs (see my delicious links), and what seems to make a difference is lighting and tones. So I thought I'd try a study of tones all based on one photograph, and see what different emotional effects I could get.

For me, most of these have different emotional effects (which, as I said, I cannot express); I would love to hear whether you think certain versions have particular moods, and what they are if you're one of the lucky ones who can put it into words! (you could refer to them as 1 thru 12) Thanks so much!

Without looking at what other commenters said, I would have to say #6. The shadows create nice shapes, especially the glasses on the face. Great study!

This kind of reminds me of the Marilyn series done by Andy Warhol.

This isn't really what you asked, but I think I like six because it's hard for me to separate what feels like good exposure and lighting from tone and mood. I'd say that one feels smooth. 2 and 12 feel harsh, unforgiving. 8 feels quiet, lonely.

I thought I should practice what I preach and try to explain my reactions to these myself.
1-gentle;
2-warm, summery;
3-ominous, foreboding;
4-delicate, smooth;
5-ethereal, peaceful;
6-dramatic, mysterious;
7-contemplative, sad;
8-silent, unwelcoming;
9-quiet happiness;
10-ghostly, vanishing;
11-hot, blistering;
12-faded, alone;

Ok, so maybe I can express something. This was fun; or maybe I'm weird.
