Study of Tone and Mood | « Toy Living Room | Main | Brick I » |

I've been thinking a bit about portraits, lighting, and my emotional responses to photographs (which by the way I cannot for the life of me put into words). I've seen some really amazing portraits on others' blogs (see my delicious links), and what seems to make a difference is lighting and tones. So I thought I'd try a study of tones all based on one photograph, and see what different emotional effects I could get. For me, most of these have different emotional effects (which, as I said, I cannot express); I would love to hear whether you think certain versions have particular moods, and what they are if you're one of the lucky ones who can put it into words! (you could refer to them as 1 thru 12) Thanks so much!

Comments6 for me too. :) Posted by: paul at March 18, 2005 10:59 PM I like 6 and 8, for the lighting. Posted by: pierre at March 18, 2005 4:54 AM Interesting study. Posted by: miles at March 15, 2005 10:01 AM Without looking at what other commenters said, I would have to say #6. The shadows create nice shapes, especially the glasses on the face. Great study! Posted by: jyoseph at March 14, 2005 9:24 PM This kind of reminds me of the Marilyn series done by Andy Warhol. Posted by: naomi-sarah at March 14, 2005 7:17 PM Very cool study and info here! Thanks for sharing it with us! Posted by: Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at March 14, 2005 4:59 PM I was wondering when Matt would become a subject. Very cool. Posted by: Nitin at March 14, 2005 12:19 PM This isn't really what you asked, but I think I like six because it's hard for me to separate what feels like good exposure and lighting from tone and mood. I'd say that one feels smooth. 2 and 12 feel harsh, unforgiving. 8 feels quiet, lonely. Posted by: Kyle at March 14, 2005 10:27 AM i like number 6. nice minimal but dramatic lighting. Posted by: zerosun at March 14, 2005 9:08 AM I thought I should practice what I preach and try to explain my reactions to these myself. Ok, so maybe I can express something. This was fun; or maybe I'm weird. Posted by: ViSuaLLyMiNDeD at March 14, 2005 1:05 AM Post a comment |
