I had fun this weekend editing this photo, which now looks nothing like the original. It's nice to be learning enough photoshop that I almost feel like I could create whatever effect I decided on. Of course there must be lots of effects that I couldn't decide on because I don't know about them yet. But I'm getting there!

Let's see if I can remember what I did. First, I used the cloning and airbrushing tools to get rid of the wires and severe vignetting in the corners. Then I duplicated the image in another layer using multiply mode to intensify the sky. Because I didn't want her to be completely silhouetted, I selected her using color range selection in the duplicated layer and cut her out. Then I duplicated the copied layer three times until the sky looked the way I wanted. I went back to the original layer and adjusted curves until I could see her as much as I wanted. This produced the color version. Then I converted to black and white using channel mixer and used curves to achieve the strong contrast. Finally I used a light effect to add vignetting and used a grain filter to add grain. I think that's it.

I like it! retaining some light in the wrinkles of her shirt and around her hairs was a good choice because it makes ger real, and not just a shadow projected on the sky. She is in a good pose and it is a very nice image of maternity.

really fantastic - looks amazing!

Heh - cute is one thing I wouldn't call this shot. It is an excellent example of a B&W portrait tho. Wonderfully mysterious and sensitive.

Excellent photoshop work and note too!

And good to hear Mr Kapp had the FZ10 as well. I'm still a fair way off selling my FZ10 - it might only be 4mp (and be a pretty ordinary CCD for that) but it is a great camera (and I can't afford anything better). I'm thinking I'll wait until a new model comes out to replace the Nikon D70 and aim for that.

I really love the feel of this photo. I think the dark sky & grain is what makes it for me. Thanks for the tutorial.

I had the Panasonic FZ10. It was one of the best cameras I've ever owned. I wish I never sold it.

You took a photo that was relatively unimpressive and made something outstanding. Great work.

This one is way better than the original. Too much disturbing background items on that one, this one is great!

I definately prefer the black and white version. Great photo...

Hey, really nice work here. You have master PS really well heh! ;) It does look like a very nice pencil drawing. It is more interesting when seeing your before and after shots.

Very nice. I especially like the "almost silhouette" effect.

A beautiful, sensitive pregnancy shot :)

The result is impressive!

This is a great black and white shot. The silhouette looks great.

This is awesome. Love the results. Its got kind of a gritty feel to it something you don't usually associate with a "pregnancy portrait".
I love that we can not see the face. Adds mystery. The grain is also very effective.
