« Sandy Dogs | Main | Barbeque Abstracts »

I haven't posted for a while because of recent sad events in our lives. Cocoa, our brown puppy pictured in the previous post passed away last Friday. She was only six months old and deserved to live a full happy life. We finally found out a couple days ago what she had: leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that is contagious to other animals and humans. Luckily, Ginger, pictured below is ok so far; she is on preventative antibiotics. I appreciate all of you still coming to visit my blog despite the lack of updates.

Because of this and because of all the work I've been doing on stock photography lately, I haven't felt very inspired to take pictures for pure enjoyment. This is despite the fact that I recently purchased a nikon D50. A couple photos with the new camera and the nikon 50mm lens are shown below. I have also gotten very picky about what is good enough to post on my blog, leading to practically nothing being postable. I think I have to get over this.

I hope that the D50 will allow me to venture into traditional stock photography, that is, macro stock photography. A few months ago I decided to try stock photography and quickly found out that my equipment was simply not good enough for a traditional agency. Even if they do not explicitly forbid cameras with only 5 MP, my previous camera (panasonic FZ20) produces too many artifacts and too much noise when viewed at 100% for these agencies. As a result, instead of having my images just sit there on my harddrive I decided to give microstock a try with the goal of making some money on my older 5mp pictures and saving up for an slr and eventually joining a macro agency.

I have learned a lot about this side of stock photography doing this, and I hope some of what I've learned will be useful for my ultimate goal of joining a macro agency. If people are interested in this I'd be happy to share more of what I've learned.

I am so glad they figured out the problem in time to put Ginger on antibiotics just in case. I hope you all are doing well. I'm sure Ginger must be missing Cocoa as well.

Gaja, I can understand your feeling because I used to have pet dogs too. I know it feel so bad seeing your beloved dog die in front of you. As zac said, get over this and look forward to the future.

Me too is very interested to learn about stock photography. Congratulation on getting a D50. Actually I am aiming at D70s, but I really don't have enough money for that. I would like to make some income out of photography too so that I can get my dream dSLR soon. I'm seriously thinking of this now. ;)

Cheers, Gaja!

I'm so sorry about Cocoa. Our pets are a part of the family and it's very difficult when you lose one.

I'm sorry about Cocoa. Pets are so sweet and loving that it's really sad when they're gone.

The D50 should be a great camera for stock work. It has enough resolution for a full page magazine photo at 300 ppi. I really like the depth of field in these photos of Ginger. I think most photographers see more flaws in their own work than anyone else, and when you are trying to market and sell your photos it's very easy to have doubts about your photography. But your work is really good, so you should trust your instincts!

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

I sell stock as well (although not at a microstock agency), but I'd like to hear about your experiences.

Sorry to hear of the unfortunate loss of an animal companion - glad to hear that the rest of the family is doing fine! Congrats on the D50 and the renewed venture - this is a fine pairing here, especially the full-frame portrait which has some tasty bokeh and a perfectly-placed subject within the DoF.

Sorry to hear about that...

I still continue visiting your photoblog, as I subscribe the XML feed. Maybe you care to post some of your experiments on macro stock photography? It sounds like an interesting thing to do in order to earn some money...

Oh, that's so so sad. I'm sorry to hear about your puppy dying. Very much luck on your macro stock photography venture - sounds like an interesting idea. BTW, glad the other puppy is healthy and hopefully stays that way.
